The Field Spaniel is a combination of beauty and utility...it has a noble carriage; a proud but docile attitude...
Symmetry, gait, attitude and purpose are more important than any one part

About Capriole Field Spaniels

D. Kay Klein
North Liberty, Iowa

Why Capriole, pronounced 'ka-prE-"Ol, for a kennel name?
Capriole came from my love of horses and interest in dressage, and my foundation bitch Carly,
Ch. Maplesugar Carillon, TD, NAJ, TDI, ROM-X
who made it clear from puppyhood she loved to be airborne. Capriole is one of the airs above the ground that is still performed by the Lipizzan Stallions of the Spanish Riding School and is characterized by "a vertical leap with a backward kick of the hind legs at the height of the leap." So it seemed very fitting to use in reference to
such athletic, airborne Spaniels.

Carly came to live with us in June of 1996. I had
no interest in breeding when I got her, but it only
took a short time till I fell deeply for her and
the breed. The first litter to carry the "Capriole"
name was born on November 3rd, 1999. Carly
had 2 litters, the first was sired by
Ch.Marshfield's Boy's Night Out, CD "Henry" and
the second was sired by
ChCT Calico's Hot Pursuit Del Prado, "Race".
Carly became a ROM Excellent producer, an
agility dog, a tracking dog and a registered
Therapy Dog.

Breeding Purpose-Soundness
The goal of breeding is to produce sound, tractable companions that have the potential to excel in a variety of endeavors while keeping those unique and endearing breed characteristics which make a Field Spaniel a Field Spaniel. Soundness, by definition, encompasses temperament, health and structure.

Health Checks
Breeding stock has been screened for the following,
so that a more informed decision can be made
regarding their suitability for remaining in
the gene pool:

- Hip/Elbow Dysplasia
- CERF (Eyes)
- Heart
- Thyroid
- Patella Luxation

We do not breed frequently and therefore have puppies available only occassionally. We are, however, planning a breeding for this Spring (2010) or early Fall (2010).
